Westbrook School Drop Off and Pick Up Zone Trial

The Council worked with Mr Watkins and the school staff in 2025 to design a safer Drop Off and Pick Up Zone outside the school on Malfroy Road. Line markings and flexible sticks/bollards are being installed, along with a new mobility park.

Why the change?

We hope that it will:

  • Create a traffic flow easier for kids to predict, therefore safer.
  • Create a loading zone for students that is safe and effective.

When will it start? The trial of this zone will begin on Monday 2nd February, the first day of Term 1, 2026.

How does it work?

This is a drop off and pick up zone - not a carpark. Drivers must remain in the car at all times.

In the morning, drive into the drop off zone and pull forward as far as you are able to drop off your child(ren) - make sure they get out on the footpath side of the car. Move forward once your children are safely out of the car, and as soon as you are able. Remember there are no U-turns in front of the school.

In the afternoon, the Pick Up Zone will be coned off and closed until 3pm.

Once it opens, please drive into the zone and pull forward as far as you are able. Stop the car but do not get out. Children who are being collected from the zone will gather and sit on the grass at the front of the school, next to the junior playground in front of Room 1 and 2. Staff will be there to help your child spot their car/parent and get into the car.

If your child is not ready, you will need to leave the zone and find a park or drive around the block to enter the zone again. You may choose to delay your arrival until 3.05pm or 3.10pm to allow time for your child to come to the front of the school.

Alternative Parking

If you need to come into school, rather than just drive in to drop off or pick up your child, please find an alternative park. There are some parks on the streets surrounding the school - Malfroy Road, Petrie Street and Hathor Street. We have mown the grass field on Memphis Place for extra parking and you are more than welcome to park there. All you would need to do in the afternoon is park, and walk down to the Petrie Street crossing where your child will be crossed over by our road patrollers  to meet you. If you park here in the morning, we recommend that you cross your child across Petrie Street to the school field, as we do not patrol that crossing before school. There is also ample parking a short distance down Malfroy Road next to the Challenge station and a shortcut up the alley way to Memphis Place.

How you can help us

  • Be patient - change takes a little time to get used to.
  • Ensure your child knows who is picking them up each day and in which car, as well as which meeting spot they are being collected from. Try not to change this during the day unless it is an emergency.
  • Delay the collection of your child in the afternoon by 5-10 minutes, especially for older children, to allow children to get to the meeting point for the pick up zone, and to avoid the congestion.
  • Consider alternative parking sports such as Memphis Place field and the carpark next to Challenge.
  • Keep your feedback constructive - we are trialing this change for the safety of your children and our students. In a few weeks, Council will be seeking feedback to see if we need to make any tweaks or further changes.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We are excited to have our students back at school on Monday and I am very much looking forward to meeting them and you, their family members and whanau.
